Horizon Imaging - Low-Altitude Aerial Photography

Equipment

Tricopter

Our current photography platform is a small radio-controlled electric multi-rotor helicopter, at the front of which a high resolution digital compact camera is supported. Using this equipment, we are able to take photographs from any point in the sky, giving the client total freedom of choice in how their subject is portrayed.

This platform was designed to be fully collapsible and highly portable - the entire system fits into two small flight cases as shown below. Assembly of the vehicle takes a few minutes.

To assist in framing the photos, the vehicle is fitted with a wireless video transmission system. This sends a live video signal from the camera to an LCD screen in the lid of the vehicle's flight case. Adjustments to the vehicle's position can then be requested by the client. Only once both the pilot and the customer are happy with the composition will the pilot remotely-trigger the camera to take the photograph.

Mast

For large public events, or situations where flying the tricopter is considered unsafe, we use a 50ft telescopic mast. This highly portable system can be erected in under 10 minutes wherever there is approximately 3 square metres of space on the ground (including uneven ground). At the top of the mast is a radio-controlled gimbal which holds a high-resolution digital SLR camera - the gimbal allowing the camera to point in any direction. The camera is connected directly to a laptop on the ground, which allows the client to see exactly what the camera is seeing in real-time. Photographs taken by the camera are downloaded straight to the laptop for instant scrutiny.

The mast can be extended to any height between 7ft and 50ft, and has several distinct advantages over the helicopter for low-altitude photography work:

- Can be used in higher winds than the helicopter
- Can be used in low-light levels (ie. dusk or night)
- Silent operation - No flight-time limitations
- Can be used where flying an aerial vehicle would be considered unsafe
(eg. over crowds or near roads)

Safety is of paramount importance to our operations, and hence all our equipment is thoroughly checked and maintained prior to every engagement to guarantee safe, reliable and dependable performance.

All our operations are covered by £10M public liability insurance, and Horizon Imaging is certified by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority to undertake commercial aerial photography work.
